TRAVEL WITH PETS

Keep a copy of your pet's medical records and an updated copy of your pet's vaccination certificate with you while you travel. In an unforeseen emergency, those records can really make a significant difference in the veterinarian's ability to properly treat your pet in a timely manner.

Where are you going? If you are traveling to a "rabies free state" - like Hawaii or other places, be prepared for 6 months or more time needed to properly complete all the requirements of the "rabies free state."

Consider your pets well-being during travel. Where will your pet be located physically during travel? (Belly of a plane, in a carrier on your lap, back of a car, etc...) Do you know how your pet handles the stress of travel? Does your pet get travel related stress to the point of diarrhea, vomitting? What will the travel temperature be and is your pet prepared?

Where are you traveling to? Do you need to be concerned with fleas, ticks, or other sicknesses, illnesses due to changes in climate? If so, talk to your veterinarian about what they would recommend before you depart so that your pet will be safe during the trip. What will the temperature be?

Do you know if there is a veterinary clinic at or near your destination and do you know where the veterinarian is located? Be sure that if you give your pet regular medications or preventitive treatments that you acquire sufficient quantities before you leave. Verify your pet's immunizations are updated. Don't let them expire while you are traveling.

Do the destinations permit pets on premises? If not, what are your plans? What are the requirements of the facility for pets to be allowed on the property?

JUST A REMINDER
If you are flying, you will want to find out what your specific airline's requirements are for pet travel.
Leaving your pet home?
If you are traveling without your pet and leaving your furry rascal home, have you authorized your veterinarian to allow another person to bring your pet in for care while you are away? Doing this is very helpful.
